Looks like it will be animated and "dark, satirical, and ....flip the vampire sub-genre on its head", whatever that means.
Castlevania
The Castlevania franchises chronicles the ongoing fight against Count Dracula by the Belmont family and their allies. To this day, Dracula continues to pose a threat to the world.
Netflix announces Castlevania show
This eventually leads to an MGS film series right? This is where this goes right?
Anyway, sure, why not. That franchise is popular and Konami ain't doing shit with it.
Sounds like it may not be that Castlevania-y but I don't even know quite what that would be anyways.
@sackmanjones: cough... don't we already have four metal gear movie? cough cough...
I'd watch this. If this is for real then I hope they give a genuine go at depicting the actual origins of the Belmont clan into something a bit less nebulous. Too many of the later games were like, " No this is the first Belmont, but no this is the first first Belmont". Make up your mind! Based on the weapons and techniques that they traditionally used in the games I always assumed they were a lineage of circus performers who had to adapt their art to fight monsters.
The Adventure Time guys? That's a neat show, but I would've expected anime for Castlevania. Hope it's a cool action show and not like, a sitcom thing. Adventure Time is pretty videogamey, so I don't doubt that they can make something faithful.
"An article up on The Globe and Mail reports that Warren Ellis has done the writing for the show’s first season."
I'm in.
@sackmanjones: is that something you really want
@sagesebas: you bet. I can hardly believe how all the games fit together, it would be hilarious to see a series or feature film try and string all the ridiculous bullshit together that is the Metal Gear Solid storyline.
When I read it was animated I was super excited for it to be an anime.
This, eh I'll pass. I'm sure Adventure Time is fine and full of witty and smart writing, I'm just not up for any sort of satirical and/or wacky take on the Castlevania franchise.
Seems like such a weird thing. Castlevania is a big franchise for sure , but i bet most of that fandom stems from the 90's games. Weird to make a series of that franchise 25 years later. A Mario or Legends of Zelda series would appeal to a wider audience i imagine.
And when you think about that hardcore castlevania fangroup, i feel like they care mostly about the music, bosses and overall gameplay, not necessarily look for a satirical take on that story by the adventure time studio.
So, according to their press release:
Inspired by the classic video game series, Castlevania is a dark medieval fantasy following the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepe himself. The animated series is from Frederator Studios, a Wow Unlimited Media company, written by best-selling author and comic book icon Warren Ellis and executive produced by Warren Ellis, Kevin Kolde, Fred Seibert and Adi Shankar.
Let me just pitch this for you:
Castlevania meets Evil Dead meets Buffy.
It just seems like they wanted to attach a name with nostalgic appeal to a new show and Castlevania was for grabs. There isn't much story really in the series up until the 360 games so its pretty much a do whatever you please with it situation, which just makes me cynical about why it is using the Castlevania name at all.

This was 100% my thoughts as well. I just don't get who this is for? That said, I've never really been crazy about the series.
Do we think that Konami will try and cash in with a game in a similar art style around the launch of this? Or is a tie-in pachinko game enough?
If it is good, that is great. If it is bad, oh well. I don't care in anyway about Castlevania and the lore so I say butcher it in any/every way to make a well told series. Netflix has a pretty good track record with their in house original content so I'll take a positive wait and see outlook.
@sackmanjones: Now that is all i freakin want!

Werner Herzog's Metal Gear Solid.

I probably says something that i've played and read up on the Metal Gear storyline so much that it doesn't even seem all that ridiculous anymore :S.
Sure ok I'll give that a shot. I spent more than 5 seconds looking at Netflix recently so I'm already halfway there to watching it anyways. I liked Transmetropolitan at one point in life, but it was so long ago I'm not sure I even want to know what it looks like anymore. Hopefully I had good taste and "dark and satirical" won't be a huge bummer in this new thing.
This is weird. Story is probably the last reason to play a Castlevania game. Looks like there's some talented people on it, so maybe it'll be something. I kind-of lost the thread with Adventure Time at some point, but I did quite enjoy what I watched of it. It's pretty freaking whimsical. I could go for a whimsical Castlevania cartoon. Just some cool adventures of the Belmont clan throughout the ages in their eternal fight against Dracula. Maybe like an 80s cartoon revival with modern sensibilities.
