And what makes it even more crazy is that I've owned the collectors edition since day one paying full price for it.
It's not that I don't like the premise of the game, or that I found it boring...
It's that it scares the crap out of me!! Honestly, the ambience and general feel of the game puts me on edge to a point of disbelief and this saddens me because I want to experience it to completion and understand what other people think of it.
Does this make me a bad person, or should I just suck it up and play it with the light on/during the day?

Venture into the mysterious, Utopian underwater city of Rapture and discover what has turned it into ruin in this first-person epic.
I've played Bioshock for 10 minutes in the space of 2.5 years...
I think if you haven't played it yet, you probably never will. Don't worry about it, try and flog it on eBay and buy a game you really know you want to play. If I could have known, I never would have bought Bioshock. I know it's not a bad game, but I hated just about everything about it.
Edit: By the way, there's nothing to be scared about, because there's no real penalty for dying. You just get respawned at a nearby chamber, and enemies you were fighting before you died don't regain their health. You're technically invincible.
I've always been the type of person to be affected by what I don't see, and more what my mind conjures up. The locale, tone and sounds of Bioshock hit right to the heart of what I find scary.
This is why I find films like The Blair Witch Project more effective than gory ones. But I generally don't find films scary anyway as I can be disconnected from it, but because in games you're more a part of what's going on the effect is amplified.
I dunno why people don't enjoy being scared, in video games that is. It's one of the best things a game can achieve, since it shows that the developers have made a game immersive enough to affect you on a psychological level, to make you forget you're even playing a game.
To deprive yourself of that just means you're a pussy.
" To deprive yourself of that just means you're a pussy. "Indeed.
There's no ethical reason not to play a game because it scares you. It's not like a splicer is going to pop out of the screen and go for me.
Thanks for all the comments, I think I'll give it another go tomorrow morning! :)
I'm right there with you, pal.
I played both BioShock on-and-off for about a year before I finished it. Same with Dead Space. But those games, while they scared the pants off of me, were two of my most rewarding gaming experiences of this generation. Play in the daytime, with other people, whatever you need to do to get through it.
I don't think that Bioshock is particularly scare so much as it is tense. The level of tension I had while playing was generally pretty high due to the atmosphere of the game. But seriously, once you get passed the first level, things do get a bit easier, but they remain equally as tense. So... suck it up!
I'm a wuss, but I managed to get by it fine. I will say that the beginning of it was definitely the scariest part, and at that point I wasn't sure if I'd be able to play the game for much longer. Splicers are creepy at first, but soon they'll be the least of your problems. It's creepy, but after a little time, you should feel okay with it. Suck it up, you'll be okay. Though, there are a few parts later on, especially with Sander Cohen, when things peak in creepiness. However, if you ask me, it's probably the most awesome and interesting part of the game.
Yeah at first I was getting freaked out by stuff in the game, but the combat is such a cinch that it kinda just became an interesting game with a cool story, not just a horror experience.
Just keep playing it, eventually it'll be fine. The beginning's the scariest part of the game anyway, seeing how messed up Rapture is for the first time and whatnot. It wears off.
It's scary? Then again I don't get scared when I play survival horror games. I don't have that emotion, maybe that's why I was bored.
The game isn't scary at all once you get more than 10 minutes in. The first 10 are the scary part where you see/hear the splicer outside but after that....
