A Great Game for New-Comers and Lovers of the Original
Bionic Commando Rearmed is a remake of the NES classic Bionic Commando. It is for XBLA and PSN, and let me just say it is probably worth $60, but it is only a mere $10. It is easily one of the best downloadable games out there, and it is worth every penny, and much much more.
Yes, this game is a platformer, but fans of jump shoot and slide platformers may feel a little lost here. There is no jump button. Why? Because it would defeat the purpose of the game. You play Nathan Spencer, a guy who looks dangerously close to Duke Nukem and has bionic arm, a huge arsenal of weapons, and he can kick a lot of ass. Now, why would it defeat the purpose? Well, the only way to get across platforms, or to the platform above you is to use your bionic arm. You can shoot it upwards and pull yourself up, shoot it at an oblique angle and swing across gaps. You can also shoot it straight to grab barrels, enemies, or to grab onto something and pull yourself towards it.
Now to the weapons. You have many guns. A pistol, machine gun, shotgun, laser gun, and a bazooka. You also have some grenades and your disposal. Each weapon has hidden upgrades in the levels, some of which are hard to find. The upgrades make the guns stronger, and faster. The Bazooka upgrad e gives you the power to navigate the rocket.
The game also features challenge rooms. And these are a huge challenge. Some of them are ridiculous. More times than not you won't know HOW to do it, rather than not being able to do it. There are 56, and secret challenge room that are accessed by finding the secret rooms in the main story levels. The secret challenge rooms are just insanely difficult. I wish anyone luck who tries to complete them all. You will get a special mark if you beat GRIN's time on the challenge room. People who are into shaving a few tenths of a second, like me, will be addicted to these damn things.
There are also achievements. Complete every challenge room, beat it on hard, there are 13 of them, most of which are really hard, once again, this game is hard. Really. Did I say this game was hard?
You can also play through the story with two players, locally. And you can have up to 4 player competitive mode. It's a blast.
Final Decision
If you think your up for the challenge, go buy this game now. It's really touch, as I've said a million times. It'll last you as long as most retail games if not longer. If you never played the original, who cares? This game is still great. Go buy it regardless.
