The unskippable opening cinematic is really bad. Like, bad quality. I don't know if they were trying some weird style but boy does the animation look awful.
Battleborn
Game » consists of 3 releases. Released May 03, 2016
A first-person sci-fi "hero shooter" from the studio behind the Borderlands series. It was notable for its loadout system and story-based mission mode, was made free-to-play in 2017, and was ultimately delisted in 2019, with a full server shutdown in early 2021.
Wow! The opening cinematic is bad!
lol I went into this thread expecting that you liked it... I liked it anyway, as well as the ending cinematic also which is done in the same style. Think the rap song that plays over it is great - Gearbox are pretty good in making licensed music choices for their games.
Here's the animated opening OP is referencing also:
Thanks for adding the video. I didn't realize how long it was, I put the dogs out and came back and it was over.
On the latest Bombcast Jeff said the song is by Deltron, is that Del the Funky Homosapien, because it sounds like him?
@darkjohnny477: That is indeed him. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deltron_3030.
I dunno. Looks alright to me. Interesting idea.
It very much looks like some lower-budget Flash animation. The backgrounds are well done, and the character designs look pretty good, but it's very flat and inconsistent (in terms of framerate, character positions and proportions, fluidity).
But yeah, 2D frame-by-frame animation is expensive. I'm not surprised they didn't shell out for higher quality stuff, considering they also had an entire game to budget for as well (there aren't any reusable assets in this, after all).
It's a deliberate stylistic choice, mixing in jankier and simpler looking animations and characters with some super fast paced, complex and fluid animations as well as some very detailed sets. Same with mixing in traditional 2D animation and 3D models. It's kind of evocative of certain eras of cartoons.
For my money it works great and I thought it was a hell of an intro. So yeah I'd say it's really good.
The animation reminds me a lot of a very specific artist who did a few semi-famous anime movies but I can't remember the person's name or the name of the only movie of theirs that I saw (it's on the tip of my tongue).
I like the animation style, tho. Lots of movement thanks to the 'sketch-like' style that you don't see in a ton of animations. Most animation looks really stiff to me unless you pour tons of money into it or can make a work-around like this Battleborn opening did.
I am 38 years old and loved G.I. Joe and Transformers cartoons. I very much remember saturday morning cartoons. Maybe I'm too old to get what they were going for, if anything.
Maybe I expected more after loving everything about the Borderlands games, including the opening cinematics.
The fact that its unskippable is fucking inexcusable. It just comes off as "look at this animation we did!!! what you don't want to watch it? tough shit for you!!!".
I actually sort of liked it. The inability to skip it did sort of suck having had issues with the PC version, at to keep watching it. :D
They have since made it stoppable right?
That wasn't bad. Pretty awesome actually. But I up grew in a time when the Aeon Flux nonsense was pretty awesome.

that's what it reminded me of too
As much as I dislike that style, I'd have a smidgen more appreciation for the game if it opted for something unique like that rather than a retread of Borderlands-esque graphics.
The opening cinematic is baller as fuck, OP. They should have spent the game budget on making more music videos for del.
