They Get Even, The Space Invaders

It's about time that those little pixelated dudes had their revenge.

Much like the sign says out front, this upcoming WiiWare game is all about the Space Invaders getting even with us pesky Earthlings. The game puts you in control of a UFO with a bevy of classic Space Invaders that you essentially use as bullets to blow up buildings and Earth's defenses as you race against time to, at least in the demo level that I saw, blow up four Eiffel Towers before the clock runs out.

You actually earn more time every time anything gets blown up, so laying waste to the city you're floating overhead seemed like a pretty smart (and fun) tactic. The game takes place from a sort of three-quarters overhead perspective. The stick on the nunchuk is used to move your UFO around, and you can toss out Invaders by pointing with the Wii Remote and hitting A to attack. The B trigger cycles through a few different attack styles, giving you a basic straight-on invader launch, looping attacks that fly in from the side, large attacks the combine invaders together to form a bigger shot, and so on. As you get hit, you lose invaders, which gives you less ammo to use in the struggle.

Space Invaders Get Even feels really straightforward and, for at least the level that I played, it also felt like it would make for a fun full product. However, the game is already on sale in Japan, and for 500 points you only get one stage. Additional stages will be released as paid downloads. That doesn't sound like a terrific deal. The game is scheduled to be released soon in both the US and Europe.
