There’s More Walking Dead Coming Before Season Two

Apparently the next season is a ways off, but "something" is being cooked up before then.

Nope, those aren't tears in my eyes. It's allergies.
Nope, those aren't tears in my eyes. It's allergies.

We already knew Telltale Games would be producing another season of The Walking Dead, but apparently the wait’s going to be a little bit easier. The studio will be releasing something before season two.

Story consultant Gary Whitta was on IGN’s Up at Noon, and revealed this big ol’ tease.

“There may very well be more Walking Dead from Telltale before season two,” he said. “We may have a little something extra for you between season one and two. There may be something in the works, even as we speak, that will make the wait for season two slightly less agonizing.”

As for when we might hear more about this, Whitta said “solid information” is coming “in the near future.” When asked for details, Telltale Games wasn’t willing to expand on Whitta’s comments.

When I spoke with project leads Sean Vanaman and Jake Rodkin earlier this year, the duo had moved onto Telltale’s next big series, based on the Fables comics. It seems likely we’re looking at a 2014 debut for The Walking Dead. The first episode of Telltale’s first season came out in April 2012.

“There’s not much to say because it is really very early in the process--we’re just starting to talk about it,” said Whitta. “It’s a way off.”

"....There may be something in the works, even as we speak, that will make the wait for season two slightly less agonizing.”

Yeah, because your adventure game was just so good that waiting for the sequel is just painful. Such arrogance upsets me.

O-kay? That's an odd reaction.

That quote is most likely responding to an interviewer asking him for the umpteenth time when there will be more Walking Dead episodes to play. Acknowledging that many people want to play a follow-up to this thing that won multiple GOTY awards is not arrogant, it's just acknowledging a reality. Nor is Whitta claiming ownership of the franchise. It's this very successful entity, separate from him, that he's been honored to pitch in on.

If you are implying that you don't think the games are good, you know that you are an outlier. There is nothing uncouth about acknowledging that tens of thousands of people are dying to know what happens next in that story.

It'll probably be episode 6, or something to that tune, that bridges the gap between the ending of season 1 and what they might do in season 2.

Ways off meaning what? Come on they can release one at a time... should not be more than like... a year?

What? Come on, you know this is the norm. He's doing a PR interview. This is what they say in PR interviews about games as positively received as TWD. Plus, this is Gary Whitta we're talking about. He's never seemed arrogant in the slightest.

I already paid for season one and this is technically still season one material they'll be bringing out, so.... they're still going to bend me over and charge for it, aren't they? (just kidding. I got my money's worth with the 5 episodes and look forward to more.)

A proper ending to Season 1 would be nice, instead of the bs "find out what happens to Clementine in Season 2" cliffhanger we were left with. The half-assed way Season 1 wrapped really left a bad taste in my mouth, to the point where I currently have no intention of continuing the series even though Season 1 was one of my favourite games of the year (first 4 episodes anyway).

That last episode was so disappointing. Criminally short; complete lack of meaningful choice (Lee still climbs ladders and hangs off ledges with one arm wtf); preposterous bad guy (so many holes here, not least of which being Clem had been talking to walkie talkie guy since before they even took the food from the station wagon); unsatisfying endings for all the long-term subplots (Kenny's sudden meaningless death, fate of Clem's parents down to a cameo, hell we don't even find out if Lee actually killed his wife ffs).

I enjoyed this largely because it was a pretty unique experience, I don't really want more of it for quite a while. 2014 at the earliest. I'm not down for dealing with more of the clunky gameplay and tech issues just yet.

A season 2 teaser using the season 1 tech (I would assume) sounds like a cool idea to keep interest alive. Also cool to hear that Sean and Jake are heading up the Fables series, I've been catching up on those comics recently and its a really well realized universe. Even though the setting is very different than Walking Dead it goes some similarly very dark places.

They would need to develop a new engine before going on to a new TWD 2 or what ever else they do. It would be fine with me if they move on to something new though. TWD was barely acceptable when playing it, I mean it wasn't really the most smooth experience.

The Walking Dead - A Telltale adventure game - on ICE!

On topic: They should probably take their time.. but not on another project. Season two better feel like a well polished videogame, because it´s going to get a lot of attention. I think it´s safe to say they´re going to have more money and staff, so hopefully some of the rough edges and especially the bugs are gone next time around.

Hmmm seems strange to do a bridging episode with nearly everyone dead. Who are you going to control?

I hope that the next game has all new characters, I could maybe see them throwing in a few cameos for Clem etc but I don't want just a continuation of the story - i'd miss too many characters.

As much as I loved the first seasons, I have no interest in playing nor plan to buy either interrim content or a new season that follows the same characters of the last season. What I've always wanted from this was "each season, we do new people from new backgrounds with new experiences in a new situation".

I've already experienced the story these characters had to tell me. In fact, more than they had to tell me (we didn't need to see Clem alive on the log at the end).

I don't know, episode 5 was a kind of a let down to me. Not to sure if I'm in on just some thing they put out to "hold people over" until new consoles come out. But as with anything I will wait until I see what it is to decide, just my initial impressions.

A few of your gripes with the game's last episode aren't really correct,

Kenny's "death" is left up to interpretation since it says that he was "lost" in the end credits summary, Clem was always talking on her walkie talkie but she didn't even make a mention of another person being on the other end until episode 3, up until that point it was really just for her own benefit. Not only that but the stranger makes a note of getting in contact with Clementine after his wife and kids have died. A dialouge option during the conversation with the stranger(who I thought was a great villian but that's really subjective) reveals everything about lee's criminal past, and the way that they handled clementine seeing her parents was perfect in my opinion, it was like a sudden punch in the gut. If they were to spend any more time with the whole clem's parent's subplot then it would have come off as melodramatic in my opinion.

Anyway, The Walking Dead was the best gaming experience I've had in a long time and I'm really excited for season 2. Having more episodes to tie in both seasons sounds amazing. Season 2 can't come soon enough!

It sounds like something short that will only be 2-3 hours. For something like that, I'd like to see a different perspective of some of the events that maybe connects between the seasons. Maybe a game from the perspective of a National Guard or the Army in the midst of deployment and evacuation procedures.

it would be nice to see season 2 on next gen systems with an updated engine. Even though the series wasn't about how this game looked technically, if they are still running on the same engine in 2014 its going to look really old.
